Heritage Family Home

Authentic yesteryear, reimagined.
The project

The brief

Traditional family home design, done well, keeps the character of classic Australian homes: deep verandahs, exposed brick and a traditional gabled roofline, reworked for the way a modern family lives day to day.

Fireplaces anchor the main living spaces, and the plan comfortably separates everyday family life from room for guests: a library, a scullery off the kitchen, a separate activity room for the kids and two guest suites for extended family.

Traditional family home design for modern life

The appeal of a traditional home is its warmth and its sense of permanence. The challenge is making that work for a busy household. This traditional family home design separates everyday family life from room for guests, so both have space without getting in each other's way.

Fireplaces anchor the main living areas, a scullery keeps the kitchen clear, and a library and a kids' activity room give each part of the family a place of its own. Designed by Design Artisan for licensee builder Lancaster Homes.

Traditional homes rely on proportion. Verandah depths, roof pitches and the spacing of windows all need to be right for a home to feel authentic rather than themed, and those details are resolved in the drawings long before construction begins. That care is what lets a new home carry the character of an older one, without feeling like a copy.
